The report\, titled “Tackling Kerala’s Water Hyacinth Menace\,” was prepared by the Future Kerala Mission\, an initiative of Jain (Deemed-to-be) University\, Kochi campus. \nThe first copy of the report was officially handed over to the Minister in Kollam by Venu Rajamony\, former Indian diplomat and Chairman of Future Kerala Mission\, along with Dr. Lakshmi and Dr. Radhakrishnan Unni of the Marine Science Department\, Jain University. \nMinister Saji Cherian said the damage caused by water hyacinth to the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen across Kerala has become a matter of serious concern. He noted that\, apart from finding sustainable solutions to eradicate the problem\, the project also aims to create new livelihood opportunities through the development of value-added products derived from water hyacinth. The Minister congratulated Jain University and the Future Kerala Mission team for their proactive initiative and assured full support from the Fisheries Department for the project. \nSpeaking on the occasion\, Venu Rajamony described water hyacinth as a social and ecological challenge that threatens both livelihoods and local ecosystems. He said the Future Kerala Mission seeks to develop a collective social response to address this crisis. He also called upon individuals\, researchers and organizations working on water hyacinth eradication to contribute by sharing their experiences\, solutions and innovations. \n \nThe project\, undertaken under the Future Kerala Mission of Jain University\, recognizes the environmental and economic impact of the water hyacinth Menace in Kerala. The public and experts are invited to share their insights and suggestions on the issue. The organizers have requested that personal experiences\, local solutions\, challenges and innovative ideas related to water hyacinth management be submitted in the form of notes\, photos or videos to keralahyacinthproject@futurekerala.org.in by October 30. \nThe report\, along with the collected feedback\, will form the basis for deliberations at a high-level international conference to be organized later this year. DESCRIPTION:Kochi: In a bold step towards transforming Kerala into a globally recognised hub of education\, innovation\, and social development\, Kochi JAIN University has officially launched the Future Kerala Mission. The initiative aims to establish world-class\, industry-driven education\, create employment opportunities\, foster entrepreneurship\, empower women\, and build a socially responsible society. \nThe mission has been conceptualised drawing inspiration from the Summit of the Future 2025\, held under the leadership of Jain University. \nFormer diplomat and Indian Ambassador to the Netherlands\, Venu Rajamony\, has taken charge as Chairman of the Future Kerala Mission. He will also serve as the Principal Advisor to Jain University. \nRajamony has held several prestigious positions\, including Press Secretary to the President of India\, Consul General in Dubai\, and Officer on Special Duty to the Kerala Government in Delhi with a rank equivalent to Chief Secretary. He has also served as Professor of Diplomatic Practice at O.P. Jindal University\, KPS Menon Chair for Diplomatic Studies at the School of International Relations and Politics\, M.G. University\, and Member of the IQAC Council at Christ Deemed to be University. He continues to advise several prominent educational institutions. \nMission set to benefit from Rajamony’s experience \nDr Tom Joseph\, Director of New Initiatives at Jain University and Chief Facilitator of the Future Kerala Mission\, said that Venu Rajamony’s national and international experience\, commitment to Kerala’s development\, and his strong relationships with leading educational institutions in India and abroad would be of immense value to the university’s academic efforts and the Future Kerala Mission. \nHe added that Rajamony’s diplomatic expertise\, gained from his service in Hong Kong\, Beijing\, Geneva\, Dubai\, Washington D.C.\, and across Kerala and India\, will significantly contribute to the mission’s success. Letha\, Pro-Vice Chancellor\, JAIN University\, delivered the inaugural address\, highlighting sustainable livelihood and community development. \nThe gathering featured an address by Dr. M K Rammohan\, Director\, MPEDA\, and felicitation by Dr. Joice V Thomas\, CEO\, NETFISH. Starter kits were distributed to promote sustainable product innovation and skill-building. DESCRIPTION:The second edition of the Capacity Building Training Programme on Value Addition of Water Hyacinth\, sponsored by NETFISH-MPEDA\, was successfully inaugurated at JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) on 9 June 2026. \nJointly organized by NETFISH under the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA)\, Ministry of Commerce & Industry\, Government of India\, and the Future Kerala Mission of JAIN University\, Kochi\, the programme aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities and generate additional income for Scheduled Caste fisher-folk and allied workers through the production of value-added products using water hyacinth. \nThe training programme welcomed its second batch of 40 participants from Chemmanakari and commenced under the leadership of Prof. Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu\, Scientific Advisor\, Future Kerala Mission\, and Dr. C. P. Resmi\, Deputy Director\, School of Humanities & Social Sciences\, JAIN University\, Kochi. As part of the programme\, starter kits were distributed to participants by Dr. Radhakrishnan Unni\, Head – Administration\, Finance & Industry Engagements\, JAIN University\, Kochi\, encouraging them to apply their newly acquired skills towards sustainable entrepreneurship. \nThe occasion was graced by Smt. Sangeetha N. R.\, State Coordinator (Kerala South)\, NETFISH-MPEDA\, while Dr. Tom M. Joseph\, Director – New Initiatives\, JAIN University\, Kochi\, visited the programme and interacted with the participants\, sharing insights on innovation\, sustainability\, and community development. \nBy transforming an invasive aquatic plant into a valuable economic resource\, the initiative continues to promote environmental sustainability\, skill development\, entrepreneurship\, and community empowerment\, creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth and improved livelihoods.

Bhupender Yadav in New Delhi and submitted the recommendations from HYACON 1\, the International Conference on the Water Hyacinth Menace jointly organized by Future Kerala Mission and JAIN (Deemed-to-be University)\, Kochi. \nThe recommendations call for a dedicated authority to coordinate water hyacinth management and for its integration into a comprehensive wetland conservation policy. The Minister assured that the proposals would be examined for further action. \nA step forward towards sustainable wetland conservation and environmental management.

The initiative empowered participants with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge to transform water hyacinth into value-added products and sustainable livelihood opportunities. \nThe final day began with a special yoga session in observance of International Yoga Day\, promoting wellness and mindfulness among participants. Expert sessions on costing\, FPO formation\, product design\, crafting\, and marketing strategies were followed by a valedictory ceremony\, certificate distribution\, and a product exhibition showcasing the participants’ creations. \nBlending wellness\, sustainability\, and entrepreneurship\, the programme demonstrated how environmental challenges can be transformed into opportunities for community empowerment and economic growth.
